| Candlelight began its activities with a series of six chamber music concerts by professional ensembles, and expanded in 1978 with the addition of a recital series. Today the Candlelight Concerts®' regular season - from October through May - includes both chamber ensemble concerts and recitals. |
| From its inception, Candlelight Concerts has provided, through its Performing Arts Series for Children, opportunities for young audiences (and their parents) to experience the pleasures of all the performing arts in special programs imaginatively conceived to spark their interest. The series began with three performances a season; currently, six diverse and exciting programs, each presented twice, are presented from October through March. These programs are presented in cooperation with Howard County General Hospital, The Columbia Flier, and the Howard County Times. |
| Since 1979, Candlelight, in cooperation with the Howard County Public School System, has presented music workshops and lecture-demonstrations for elementary, middle school, and high school students. These programs offer opportunities not only to listen but to meet and talk with many of the artists who perform in the adult concert series. The program began with just three workshops during the school year and has offered as many as nine. In 1993, the "Face the Music" pre-concert lecture series was initiated, in which artists, musicologists, and other music personalities give informative presentations for people of all ages. With the 25th Anniversary Season, 1997-98, Candlelight Concerts began to explore an expanded community outreach program through the placement of mini concerts in venues outside the formal concert hall, such as Howard County General Hospital and the Cedar Lane School for Exceptional Children. Dependent upon funding, this program will continue and expand to include nursing facilities. |
Candlelight Concerts has been fortunate over the years to have had many of the world's greatest musicians on our series. In order to recognize and honor some of these fine artists who have made significant contributions to chamber music, and most importantly to Candlelight Concerts, the Board of Directors has established a Board of Honorary Trustees. The Board of Directors proudly announces the appointments of Richard Goode, Manuel Barrueco, Miles Hoffman, and Marilyn Horne as Candlelight Concert Society Honorary Trustees. |
